Septic Odor Causes and Solutions

Septic Odors?

Sewer smells or odors may be the first sign of septic system troubles or septic tank failure.  A failing septic system needs to be attended to quickly as it can cause harm to you and your family.

There are several locations withing an onsite septic system where you may smell sewer odors.  It can be inside the house, in the yard, around the spetic tank, near the pre-treatment unit or in the septic field.  If you smell the odor, try to locate where the sewer odor is the strongest to narrow down the cause.

We have briefly outlines some of  the more common causes and solutions.

Odor around the Septic Tank
Usually there is a faint odor around the septic tank.  If the odor is strong, a problem most likely exists.

Cause:
If there is an odor leakage from the septic tank, it may be that the lid to the septic tank is not on securely.  This will cause the odor to be stronger than the faint odor you would normally smell. It could also mean that you have a leak in your septic tank, roots have entered your septic tank or a septic system failure.

Solution:
Make sure that the lid is on securely.  Cover any leaks with a temporary sealant and call Ace Acme to schedule maintenance and permanent repair.  We will inspect your septic tank for any leakage and repair it according to plumbing specifications.

Sewer Odor around Soil Treatment area or Septic Field
A sewer gas odor around the in-ground drain field, bed or mound normally indicates a problem with that area.

Cause:
Your sewer pipes may be broken or have a crack in them

Solution:
Pipes need to be inspected and fixed by a professional. Ace Acme Septic Services will check the area to see if there is any wet or spongy area due to sewage. This is a serious issue and considered a public health risk.  Sewer leakage needs to be repaired immediately!

Sewer gas odor in basement or inside your home
If you have sewer odors inside your home, it typically indicates a plumbing problem.

Cause:
The drying out of a trap in a basement floor drain that allows gases from the septic tank to vent back into the home.

Solution:
Fill the drain traps with water once a year to insure they are working.  Make sure the cleanout access plug inside a drain is tight so that sewer gas does not escape.  Unless you specifically find that it was a clogged filter or a dry trap, you need to call on Ace Acme Septic Services to send out a professional trained person to locate the cause and repair the problem.

Sewer odor throughout the house
If you smell a foul odor throughout your home, it may be that the plumbing vents are clogged.

Cause:
The plumbing vent on the roof may have frozen or gotten clogged with leaves or debris which stops the water from entering the vent thus allowing the fumes to escape the septic tank.

Solution:
Clean out any debris or leaves that may have clogged the vent on the roof.  It is always a good idea to Call Ace Acme Septic Services so that we can insure that there are no serious problems that you have not identified.
